Carceral jaguar geographies along the US/México border and the case for border abolition

Jaguars carry deep cultural and spiritual significance throughout the Americas, from sports mascots to their associations with Indigenous deities veneration as a vulnerable charismatic megafauna. Though thought be extinct in US for much of twentieth century, they maintain small but powerful presence along US/México border region. The continued viability these jaguar populations is severely threatened by walls that government has been working erect since early 2000s. By examining entanglements between geographies on one hand, racially disposable migrants, peoples, racial capitalism other, this article argues carceral configurations nation-state borders, conservation, immigration enforcement are incompatible liberatory notions human nonhuman survival. It poses abolition takes seriously nonhuman, vis-à-vis jaguars, essential making ecologies within beyond borderlands.
